Scholarships awarded by aviation supplier

Airservices Australia, provider of air traffic management, air navigation support services and aviation rescue and firefighting, recently awarded two of its three annual NSW scholarships to students at TAFE NSW – Southern Sydney Institute, St George College.

Citing their 'significant academic achievements', ASA awarded Paul Phillips and Ai Min Li $2500 each, as a contribution toward their further studies.

Paul, Ai Min and college staff were treated to a tour of ASA's air traffic control tower at Kingsford Smith Airport in Sydney following the formal presentation of their cheques and certificates. All were dazzled by the complexity of the operation and the amount of equipment and personnel involved in keeping the city's primary airport running smoothly.

Paul, 22, is in the 2nd year of an Electrical Engineering Certificate. "I really enjoy the electro-computing and hardware aspects of the course, so it was great to see ASA's operation," he said.

Dave Dearnley, Head Teacher Electrical Engineering at St George College, describes Paul as "having excellent standards, great practical skills and theory. And never afraid to take part and ask questions." That enthusiasm was evident during the tour of the facilities, with Paul keeping Airservices' technical staff busy explaining equipment and procedures.

The other winner, Ai Min Li, is a 39-year-old holder of a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Automation/Computing from a Chinese university. He worked for five years in technical processing in China before moving to Australia and commencing his TAFE NSW course.

Ai Min's teachers say he's meticulous in his work – "There is never a stroke out of place."

The scholarships (12 of which are awarded across the country) are not yet a part of Airservices' formal recruitment process, but Andrew Wheatley, Manager of Facilities Management at Sydney Airport, hopes that it might encourage students to apply for work at Airservices on completion of their course.
